Review Pioneer’s Elite SC Models

January 23rd, 2010

Pioneer has launched 2 new additions to their Elite receivers with the launch of the Pioneer SC-27 and the Pioneer SC-25. With such highlights as ICEPower amplification, Internet streaming, iPhone control, and lots more, Pioneer is looking to convince you to upgrade whether you are ready to or not. With prices ranging from $700 to $2000, there unquestionably is something for everyone in this latest group of models from Pioneer.

The gloss black front plates of the Pioneer Elite receivers has been reputable to lure in more than one trusting Audioholic to a purchase they weren’t quite equipped to make. These new Elite offerings persist that tradition was marvelous, if rectangular, aesthetics. The latest SC offerings are definitely the pinnacle of the Elite line. At $2000 and $1700 respectively, the Pioneer SC-27 and SC-25 are jam packed with features. Probably the most important is that the SC-27 is the first and only to obtain THX certification with digital amplification. They both utilize Bang & Olufsen designed ICEPower modules providing 140 watts per channel into seven channels.

Additionally, the SC-27 has achieved the AIR Studio Monitor certification. While this is not the highest level of certification that AIR Studios offers (Monitor Reference is), it is quite an accomplishment. For those that have never heard of AIR Studios, they listen to and evaluate gear based on a number of criteria. For the Pioneer SC-27, they made certain that the stereo must sound the best and multi-channel should be just as superior. This requires similar, independent, discrete power amps for each channel. There is no unnecessary digital processing. ‘Direct’ modes that genuinely provide as clean a signal path as possible. Mixing room monitors are adjusted for correct distance, SPL and frequency response. Such adjustments are required at home without recourse to a professional acoustician.
